about

Zantogola have returned with their second release, titled “Talendjourou”. In keeping with their usual eclectic style, Zantogola have woven lead percussionist and composer Alex Dayo’s deep understanding of traditional West African rhythm and harmony, together with a receptiveness to evolving modern styles, to create a rich, complex but recognisable sound. Percussion and melody work in cohesion, merging the boundaries between them.

These 2 tracks were produced in association with Matteo Boyero who hosted the recordings at the Wahever Studio.
Both songs are sung in Bambara, one of the many languages spoken in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

The title track “Talendjourou” means “Spider’s Web”.
It describes the fragile network of brotherhood and sisterhood. Just like the web of a spider, we can reinforce these networks of friendship by pulling each other closer, with coordination and communication. Global events testify to the gradual erosion of our human values. But together we can breathe life back into our emotional and loving relationships, and rebuild a kinder and more sustainable world.
Talendjourou features Nepalese singer Shreya Rai.

Djïo Dji means “Rain Falls”.
It is inspired by a West African childhood song, sung in the playgrounds of Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinée, Gambia and the Ivory Coast. The lyrics are about torrential rain, wind and storms, about an exhausted bird struggling to fly high and the conversation of a rolling stone broken by the thunder. In our day to day lives, this naive children’s song stands here to remind us of what has happened to our beautiful world, and what needs to be done to save it from climate and environmental collapse.
Djïo Dji features Ethiopian singer and visual artist Haymanot Tesfa.
