about

Joy of Sound (JOS) was founded in January 2000 as a Millennium Commission Fellowship Award for pioneering grass-roots Inclusive Community Arts and Music projects devised by William Longden Phd, that work to increase personal, social and cultural awareness through inclusive creative community interaction.
JOS co-develops and produces bespoke music instruments, access devices and participatory music-making approaches that facilitate the active engagement of disabled and excluded people as cocreators of original inclusive participatory community music and arts.
By including all-comers, irrespective of race, gender, ability, or age - the JOS community embodies a rich cultural mix and resource which compels and encourages towards increased awareness of our shared humanity, advocating for equity and wellbeing.
This album is 1 hr in duration, the length of a typical JOS workshop – and utilises JOS’ recordings of live workshops and happenings, public events, festivals and archival materials in celebration of music making as a sharing of feelings. Over 300 musicians participated from around the world contributing individual distanced recordings for inclusion into the collective mix.
JOS’ participatory emancipatory arts’ practice is renegade and unswerving in its dedication to the use of improvisation as a universally accessible human aesthetic that facilitates individual expression toward creative community interaction.
The albums E♭ sonic audio-space shapes a warm and broad tonal range for vocal expressions that are Playfully subversive and give distinct form to JOS’ particular music idiom.
Two years in the making and undeterred by social distancing limits imposed in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, this album marks JOS ’ 20th anniversary. It has been produced in acknowledgement and appreciation of each and every one of the thousands of participants and volunteers who have contributed to JOS’ remarkable legacy.
Profits will go to the Joy of Sound.
